My Opinion

Why is AWS beating Google, Microsoft, Oracle and IBM?

I believe Google Cloud was launched after AWS so a head start helps for one.

AWS also has a free tier, it’s like giving the first hit of ecstasy to someone free. Why not use this free server. Then that server needs to expand and you make plans and youre hooked and know the AWS cloud better than Google.

Google Cloud offers a credit of $300 right now to try and get you involved but its not the same as a free tier of service. Once the $300 is gone its always going to cost you whereas you can downgrade a server back to the free tier if ya decide to do that.

There are also some wonky decisions that Google made that leave me annoyed almost daily. The fact you cant utilize smtp ports of the servers leaves me having to go all around to get a WordPress site to send emails…or the inability to easily transfer a project between accounts. I’ve landed myself in a situation where I transferred ownership but I didn’t remember to transfer billing but was no longer a project owner so I couldnt transfer billing anymore, customer service just acted like it made sense that I couldn’t use or config the resource but that my credit card was still going to be used.

SSH and SFTP into AWS fairly standardized and it is relatively seamless. Google makes these difficult.

The way they only give out one static ip address per zone. They have a BETA project and decide if its to allow multiple IPs but…what took so long?  IP Aliases or multiple network ip addresses … on AWS I just added the IP addresses, why do I need more than one?  Because my name servers need to have different IP address, but again I cant do it right now.

So with all these limits here and there I personally pay for my servers with AWS (its just easier to use) but I use Google Cloud for short experiments where I may need more than 1 IP, and a site that doesn’t ever send an email. Configuring Alias IP Ranges is new and overdue.

Top SEO Tools I Use: MonitorBacklinks.com

Series of posts over the next few months to say what I’ve found works and what doesn’t in SEO.  So this is installment 1 in Top SEO Tools I Use.

So this is somewhat of a product endorsement piece but its also worth sharing with others what you’ve found useful and hopefully they’ll let you know what they have found useful. So Tools I use and even a few I don’t and why.

monitor backlinksMonitorBacklinks.com

No the first tool has NOTHING to do with keywords but more importantly everything to do with deciding what your keywords are … if you think my life revolves around keywords you really need to catch up.  Backlinks and anchor text are the hardest things to control and often the most impactful.  Consider….back in the 2000s Miserable Failure was backlinked to George W Bush’s White House biography page by so many websites that he ranked number one on Google for Miserable Failure.  Now I guarantee his site had NO SEO or optimization for Miserable Failure but he held that spot until a counter wave of links went to Jimmy Carter.   Then Google manually shut the term war off.  Its backlinks that make or break a sites ranking.

You can optimize all day long on content choices and keywords but if the rest of the world doesn’t think you are that in their links neither will Google.  So the product is essential.  It trends your links and competitors and its just $25 a month.  Here are screenshots I have taken from time to time to include in reports to clients.monitorbacklinks.com

Notice the colored circles at the top break down the links and provide you with metric like CF TF and DA.  Below that image you can see link by link and the strength of each link as well as no follow or follow status.

Below are more links since the site added more features.  Under the status column the G shows if its indexed by Google with green as good and indexed, yellow as not indexed but not out right banned and finally red … the worst link and honestly its like being caught hanging out with the wrong crowd.  Google even allows you to “disavow” the red Gs.

Backlinks Ranking and Traffic

Image above trends you backlinks, your traffic and your keywords.  This graph is also why I dont mind nofollow links and I believe they do affect ranking.  Notice the tower of purple nofollow domains that linked to us when I released a news story.  The orange keyword position swings up from 90 to 50 as the new position.

An Article Worth A Second Read

So I was cleaning up some posts on Sean Delahanty’s site and making them fresh for folks when I ran across this often missed and misunderstood posting of a WDRD story.  Sean Delahanty and the controversy with jailing everyone for everything.

The issue can kinda be boiled down to this …

If you are arrested you are innocent until proven guilty. Thats our rule of law. Now LMPD and prosecutors feel that if the police arrest you, you are guilty and you should only get bail if they (the police think you shouldnt be there…which why would they bring them there if they didnt think they were guilty?) But these two statements cant both be true…

officers
LMPD officers arrested following allegations of rape of underage minors.

Or how about the guy who was a suburban police chief who said just shot the black people.

Racist Chief

SO police arrested those police officers…so they must be guilty?  And this racist says shooting black people is cool…even the County Attorney had to agree the police were wrong on that one. But then …. see its a paradox.

Now I’m not saying that LMPD officers are normally like these three…but I am saying they are human, and capable of good and bad.

They are not judge and jury ..thats why we have a judge and jury.  If you get the time read that long in depth article.
